An introduction to leading in a VUCA World - Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. It certainly has been the year for it.VUCA, short for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, and a catch all for “Hey, it’s crazy out there!”

What does VUCA mean?

Volatile – change is rapid and unpredictable in its nature and extent.

Uncertain – the present is unclear and the future is uncertain.

Complex – many different, interconnected factors come into play, with the potential to cause chaos and confusion.
Ambiguous – there is a lack of clarity or awareness about situations.

Bob Johansen, author of Leaders make the Future, adapted VUCA for the business world. He used it to reflect the turbulent and unpredictable forces of change that could affect organisations. He presented the case that leaders need new skills, approaches and behaviours to manage in the face of the four VUCA threats.

2020 has presented a whole new level of challenges for leaders and teams have never looked for direction, stability, hope and compassion more.

This is an opportunity to dissect your Covid 19 experience and hunt for the good, build on the learning so far and think about the future.

We ask and answer great questions like:

- How have we worked differently to enable the impossible to happen during the pandemic (including our decision making, processes, resource allocation, communication, and location)?

- What learnings and new muscles should we bring forward into the organization for the future?

- Going forward, is there an opportunity for me to manage a “to be” list with the same rigour as my “to do” list?

What is our Social responsibility coming out of the pandemic?

- On what stakeholders should we collectively and as individuals recalibrate our focus?
